Managing Difficult Conversations with Success

Overview:

An essential skill for maintaining meaningful and productive interpersonal relationships, in all areas of life, is the ability to handle difficult conversations effectively. Whether we have to deliver bad news, address under- or poor performance, terminate a relationship, ask someone to change or apologise for a mistake, knowing how to tackle contentious issues in a calm, balanced and impactful way is a valued skill.

According to a recent study, 72% of people in the workplace avoid difficult conversations for fear of how the person will react and not knowing how to handle the emotions that will arise. To “protect” the relationship, most people delay instigating a much-needed conversation hoping that the issue will be resolved without intervention. Unfortunately, when sensitive situations are not dealt with in a timely, clear and caring way, problems will eventually escalate and become more difficult to resolve.

Knowing how to conduct difficult conversations and steer them to a positive outcome can lead to increased productivity, engagement, loyalty and can inspire people to perform at their best.
